Flags and Banner Etiquette Rules - A Short Guide

Flags are a symbol of national pride and respect the world over. They not only uniquely identify each nation, but also symbolically represent the culture, history, and fundamental values cherished by the people of those nations.

Flags are normally flown on days of national importance such as Independence Day, Republic Day, and other state occasions. Given their symbolic importance, there are specific rules, norms, and etiquette codes associated with handling and deploying flags at public and private places. Many of these rules relate to treating the flag with dignity and respect that they truly deserve.

Flags and banners should be of specified material and dimensions. With online stores selling flags and banners, it is easy to get product information and buy the right product online.

Some of the basic rules of etiquette for handling and displaying flags are -
Flags should be kept properly folded during storage, and not left untended.
While folding the flag, there are specific folding techniques that can be used.
The national flag should be visually prominent, normally at the center and at greater height when displayed with other state and local flags.
The normal state of a flag is free flying and without touching anything underneath.
There is a set way of destroying a worn or unusable flag.
Flags are normally displayed outdoors throughout the day.
At nighttime, care should be taken to make sure the flag is visible and well lit.
On crossed staffs with another flag, the national flag should be seen in its standard display position. The same applies when the flag is carried in a procession with other flags.

As the national flag carries symbolic values of national pride and dignity, the above considerations need to be observed with due care. Care must be taken to make sure that no signs of disrespect are shown while storing, handling, and hosting, and that ceremonies and processions are conducted as per the norms on such occasions.
